Robert Pirsig on Freedom

From ‘Lila:’

“Of all the contributions America has made to the history of the world, the idea of freedom from a social hierarchy is has been the greatest…”

“And yes, although Jefferson called this doctrine of socially equality ’self evident,’ it is not at all self evident. Scientific evidence and the social evidence of history indicate the opposite is self-evident. There is no ’self-evidence’ in European history that all men are created equal. There’s no nation in Europe that doesn’t trace its history back to a time when it was ’self-evident’ that all men are created unequal.

Jean Jacques Rousseau, who is sometimes given credit for this doctrine, certainly didn’t get it from the history of Europe or Asia or Africa. He got it from the impact of the New World upon Europe and from contemplation of one particular kind of individual who lived in the New World, the person he called the ‘Noble Savage.’

The idea that ‘all men are created equal’ is a gift to the world from the American Indian. Europeans who settled here only transmitted it as a doctrine that they sometimes followed and sometimes did not. The real source was someone for whom social equality was no mere doctrine, who had equality built into his bones. To him it was inconceivable that the world could be any other way. For him there was no other way of life.”

Healthcare

WHILE I MUCH PREFER MY PROPOSAL FOR HEALTH CARE, INCREASING THE SIZE OF THE DEFICIT DURING THIS PERIOD OF DEFICIENT AGGREGATE DEMAND SHOULD NOT BE THE REASON FOR REJECTING OR ACCEPTING THE PROPOSED HEALTH CARE ACT.

DEFICIT MYTHS HAVE MOVED THE DISCUSSION OFF POINT.

Warren Mosler

August 5, 2009 - Scrap Health Care Reform If It Adds To Deficit, U.S. Voters Tell Quinnipiac University National Poll; Voters Disapprove Of Obama’s Handling Of Health Care

American voters, by a 55 - 35 percent margin, are more worried that Congress will spend too much money and add to the deficit than it will not act to overhaul the health care system, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. By a similar 57 - 37 percent margin, voters say health care reform should be dropped if it adds “significantly” to the deficit.

JFK on Govt, secrecy, and the press

From John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address, January 20, 1961

“The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe - the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution.”

Don’t vote for anyone who wants to balance the federal budget!

Fiscal Adjustments

$785 billion over several years

Small, selected payroll tax cuts

Full payroll tax holiday for employees and employers with the Treasury making all of the payments. This will stop the removal of about $20 billion per week from employees and employers struggling to make their mortgage and loan payments.

Funds for the States for Federally selected projects only

$300 billion for the States on a per capita basis with no strings attached regarding spending

Funding for a minimum wage job for anyone willing and able to work

Social Security
and Medicare

The funds won’t be there unless we make all the hard choices to fix it. This means tax increases and benefits cuts.

The government has the ability to make payments without tax increases or benefit cuts

Banking

No clear policy. Continuing capital <legally> injections and policies designed to <the payments> increase lending.

Allow the FDIC to do its job of taking over insolvent institutions and protecting system.

Housing

Govt. assisted restructuring of mortgages in a series of complex assistance programs with moral hazard issues and issues with interference with prior financial contract law

Allow homes to go into foreclosure at which time the government can buy the house and rent it to the former owner at market rents. The houses will be subsequently resold after a two year holding period at market prices.

Deficits

Promised to cut the deficit in half in his first term

Promise to keep the deficit at levels to sustain output and employment
